The neighborhood we're in is called La Condesa, just southwest of Chapultepec Park. There's a bakery on the corner that the boys spotted when we got here last night and they were anxious to get there this morning. It smelled heavenly and there were so many breads, rolls and pastries we all had trouble choosing. For all five of us is was about $1.40—this could get dangerous. We strolled over to the park and walked around a bit. It's beautiful and the main drag down the middle is lined with vendors so it was quite entertaining as well as interesting. Ike is far more willing to use his language than the other two and we put him to the task today. Jake is actually a bit better at reading the signs, probably because the twins skipped Spanish this year and it's fresher for Jake, but Ike blows him away in understanding what everyone is saying. Very few people speak English (so far) and those who do speak very little, so this should be good for all of us. After leisurely strolling through the park, we walked down the main boulevard, La Reforma, to the Angel of Independence monument. |
We stopped back in the park for some incredible aguas frescas and then the boys had some street tacos. In the afternoon we got some groceries and then the boys wanted to just hang out while Matt and I walked down to Parque España. La Condesa is quite the hipster area. We had as much fun people watching as enjoying the cityscape. We've been to many, many cities and I don't think I've ever seen so many trees. A few of the big boulevards have center sidewalks that are so lushly planted, you can't see the traffic on either side of you. It was quite beautiful.
Just as we were getting back to our condo, we heard a ruckus from the corner restaurant, a Chilean place. We discovered they were watching Chile beat Uruguay to reach the Copa America semi-finals. They were screaming Chi-Chi-Chi Le-Le-Le and hugging each other. Their over-enthusiasm was fun to experience.
Ike summed it up best when he said, "I love this place. There's food everywhere!"
